About our Church

Mission

Kingwood Christian Church seeks to be an authentic family of faith that embraces people where they are with the extravagant love of Jesus. No matter who you are, where you’ve been, or where you are on your journey, you are welcome here. We are an open and inclusive community committed to learning and practicing the teachings of Jesus. We have only one confession, one faith statement that unifies us.

Confession of Faith

We confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the Living God,
And proclaim Him the Lord and
Savior of the World.

This confession serves as the binding tie that draws us together as a family of common faith, inviting us to share life in open-minded conversations and authentic relationships. If you are searching for a faith community that looks like this, then welcome home to Kingwood Christian Church.

Ray

“There’s a lot to be said about the greeting we got from the people in church. The first day I stood in the lobby a lot of people came up, shook my hand and talked to me. It was more than just an arbitrary hello. They were really interested in you and what you did. People were friendly, open and welcoming.”

John

"As a lifelong disciple for more than 80 years, I understand that religion has changed but the need for it has not. The church is essential for a civilized society, for values and structure, balance, relationships, navigating difficult challenges and service to the community.”

Disciples of Christ

We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada grew out of two movements seeking Christian unity that sprang up almost simultaneously in western Pennsylvania and Kentucky – movements that were backlashes against the rigid denominationalism of the early 1800s.

Thomas and Alexander Campbell, a Presbyterian Scotch-Irish immigrant father and son in Pennsylvania, rebelled against the dogmatic sectarianism that kept members of different denominations – and even factions within the same denomination – from partaking of the Lord’s Supper together. Walter Scott, an immigrant from Scotland, was a successful evangelist of the resulting Campbell movement as it separated from the Baptists.

History

Founded in 1977

Kingwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in 1977 when a group of interested families responded to an ad in the local newspaper about the organization of a Disciples of Christ church in the Humble/Kingwood area. Thirty people gathered in the Forest Cove home of Frank and Joyce Coupal on Sunday, May 1, 1977, and Kingwood Christian Church was born. At the time, Kingwood was in its infancy, and the nearest Disciples of Christ congregation was 30 miles away. Services were first held in the Woodland Hills community room and then at Woodland Hills Elementary, where every chair, table, and hymnal had to be loaded and unloaded into a trailer for worship each Sunday.

First Building Constructed in 1983

In 1983, our first building, a multi-purpose metal building was completed (now known as Fellowship Hall). Many of the original members are still an active part of the KWCC family today.

Sanctuary Completed in 2001

Completion of our current sanctuary on West Lake Houston Parkway was finished in 2001.

The Table Service Began in 2018

On October 7, 2018, Kingwood Christian Church followed God into a new chapter in our ongoing story. After over a year of prayer and planning, we created “The Table” service, a unique, authentic, and inclusive worshiping community. The Table is a fresh expression of our collective heart and calling to be an “open and inclusive faith community committed to learning and practicing the teachings of Jesus.” At Kingwood Christian Church, we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, where everyone is welcome, included, and celebrated as an image-bearer of God.

ANNE

“We have a lot of people coming here because they’ve had bad experiences or no experience in church in the past. What you’re seeing here is what you’re getting. We truly mean everyone is welcome and everyone can take communion. That one statement of faith is it. There’s not a long list of requirements or statements of belief. We really will like you as you are.”
